      我觉得理解成动名词符合句意。 假如理解成目前分词，则是强调是哪种一流科学家，不符合句意。

2）因为可以说sb takes sometime to do sth, 因此，上面假如改成 taking their time to look at all of the elements...可否？

原句...taking their time looking at all of the elements  和 改写句...taking their time to look at all of the elements 在理解上，“到底”有什么不同呢？

1 there are 对你说主语是复数。所以scientists为主语，后面的doing只能是目前分词作定语。假如你把doing剖析为动名词，那样就是动名词复合结构作主语，there are 可以吗？你的剖析显然是不对的。这么明显结构，你视若无睹，抱怨你搞不清，我看你是懒得动脑子。假如你是我的学生，是要打板子的。
